Artist Statement

My practice shifts from the shaping of still objects to the recording of movement, experimenting with symbolic costumes, props, and the body to complete a performance, an evocative expression. In the performance, I record the flashback experience of entering another spatial and temporal latitude, gaining insight into the edges, fissures, and chaos of my own obscured and erased in unexpected events, feeling death in 'éternité' and transcending my original static image of death.

Inspired by Gilles Deleuze's perspective on the 'event', he sees "it is not a rupture, but a differential relationship to some singular point on a function curve." I question the practice of regarding such events as simply a describable fact by dissecting the impact of the sudden event on myself, I find the event constantly changes towards a more open uncertainty and possibility, and in this change, transcend the tangible, visible, static nature of the fact. I am committed to exploring how my artistic expression can be used as a 'monument' to collect the impressions of the countless receding moments of episodic events on our senses.

By exploring the material of the willow, I found that when shaped in a wet state and left to dry, the flexible nature of the willow itself transformed into an external tension and a powerful life force. The willow structure was then wrapped with colored raffia like a sutra tower handed down from the Ancient Zhang Zhung era, a primitive ritual culture derived from animal souls. The aim is to refine the simplicity and primitiveness of the materials and blend them with my awkward and clumsy dance steps in the performance to achieve a subtle sense of the soul's presence and feel the extension of life.
